Hi. I am sorry if this has been asked before but not sure what to do. My mom has advanced Alzheimer's disease and has been in a care home for 2 years. She is relatively settled and the staff are wonderful. My mom is becoming more and more verbally and physically aggressive. She had a review a couple of months ago with her medicine and they changed one of her tablets but she's just getting worse. The home have called the doctors again and they are coming out tomorrow to review them again. The home have told us though that they can't cope with her for much longer, as she is attacking staff on a daily basis. The thought of having to move her is heart breaking, we don't know what to do. Are there specialist dementia homes that could cope with aggression? I'm so worried my mom could seriously hurt someone or hurt herself and I'm panicking if we do have to move her what if she doesn't settle. It's heart breaking.

It's true that there are homes that can handle aggression. Maybe you have a Social Worker who can advise. The existing care home may know what's available locally as they must have come across this common situation before.

Failing that, you may be able to trace somewhere on a site such as this one https://www.carehome.co.uk/care_search.cfm

Hi Jellymac, I'm sorry to hear this about your mom. My dad is challenging and can be aggressive and we had to move him to another care home that could cope. I was advised by his Social worker to look for EMI care homes with a dedicated Dementia care unit, which specifically deals with challenging behaviour, one term used was Dementia+. The care homes appear no difference than other care homes on the surface, they just tend to have a smaller ratio of residents to staff which enables them to give more one to one care, there are also fewer residents which also helps. They are also better trained in dealing with challenging behaviour, recognising the signs before they escalate and I have found the home dad is in is better equipped regarding safety and security and there are less triggers for them to become challenging.

As someone already said if you have a Social worker they should be able to help you and if you haven't got one, get in touch with Social Services, explain the situation and ask for help.

Good luck.
