Sorry, a mite off topic, but on another forum I visit, someone was just complaining about cake sales for charity, and in particular about someone giving her a flyer for a cake sale in aid of a dementia charity!

It would be so much better for everyone's health, this person piously argued, if instead of making dreadful cakes to make everyone fat and very likely predispose them to dementia anyway (she argued) people would tot up the cost of the ingredients and donate that, instead.

I ask you!
I sent a fairly tart reply, pointing out that a few charity cakes were hardly going to make any difference in the great scheme of things.

Oh please, so she thinks only fat people get dementia? I don't think so. Home made cake, you really can't beat it!!

And selling the cakes brings in far more for the chosen charity than the cost of the ingredients, besides giving the purchaser a nice treat for tea.
Nowt funnier than folk......

It also brings you into contact with others, which is a sociable thing to do and good for self esteem and wellbeing.

I'm in favour of the whole cake shebang :D

Absolutely! It has less to do with the cakes, and more to do with people feeling involved, allowing people to DO something, and contribute either by donating, manning the stalls or purchasing. Not to mention the feeling of community spirit these events generate. And the feeling that we are all in this human condition together and can help raise funds and awareness for the relief of our common ills. A wonderful way of getting people talking too.

I make biscuits for charity fundraisers sometimes. And apple tarts (pies) and chocolate biscuit cake, which organisers usually cut and sell by the slice.
Hmm. Want cake now!

Maybe Ms Misery needs to be introduced to a Dementia Specialist so that she can pass on her valuable information in case they have never realised that cakes "very likely predispose them to dementia"

Lol Witzend, I'm so glad that you gave her a tart reply.

Gosh, now I really want to sample that chocolate biscuit cake Lady A.
