Whet to do? where to go?
Have made enquiries and no vacancies anywhere.
Mum is 96, has alzheimers and vascular dementia. Mum is now being aggressive with care staff both verbally and physically. All this has an adverse effect on the other residents.

Just received a phone call from the home. The medication is not working, she is refusing personal care.....and so on.

Welcome to TP valmo :)

I'd get the GP out & get the medication tweaked. Sometimes it takes a while to get the right balance.

It has been tweaked and tweaked, nothing has helped. The GP has done all they can. Her aggression is getting worse. Wont let anyone help her at all. I will see her tomorrow and see whats what. and thats where she wants to return to. Of course there is no family left now!
I see you are from Merseyside

Thanks for the welcome. :)

What kind of care home is this? Is it specialised in dementia care? Because then they should know how to handle her. Maybe getting her sectioned might help to get her into the place she really needs to be in?

Has she been checked for water infections?

Could you get a Geriatric Consultant involved?

Aggression is an easy word for care staff to use when they do not know the best way to handle behaviour.

If you did not know where you were and wanted to leave but a stranger kept coming and telling you to sit down, how would you feel?

If you were in bed and a stranger came and tried to undress you, how would you feel?

If you are feeling really angry about something but nobody around you will take you seriously, how would you feel?

In other words, are the staff trained in caring for dementia?

Best wishes TinaT

Yes I have thought of this, sectioning. It is not a specialist dementia care home. Tho, they say some staff have dementia awareness training. I was a Social Worker so I understand what this is. In my observations some staff have no idea how to deal with 'behaviours'
I am looking at alternative care now.
Thanks

If Mum is sectioned would the LA have to find a place for her? Mum is self funding.

Valmo, my mum was in a specialist dementia nursing home but continued to have severe 'behavioural' problems. Sectioning was mentioned from the start, but as there were no beds in the hospital assessment unit at that time the Home decided to assess there in the Home. Unfortunately things only became worse and after quite a long time she was finally sectioned. She was upsetting other residents, and there were safeguarding issues. And Mum suffered terribly from her inner turmoils.
The mere word 'sectioning' filled me with fear but in fact it was the best thing that could have happened. The Assessment Unit was wonderful and Mum did well there. They looked at her meds, tried to tweak them ect but really there was little they could do. They then gave us names of just 4 Homes able to manage her condition and Mum moved to one of these. She is still agitated, gets aggressive unpredictably, but now receives the support she needs. She remains challenging for staff. I think you asked about self funding? Mum was a self funder but was receiving NHS CHC prior to being sectioned but this has now ceased and she receives funding from another NHS pot, organised by the assessment unit. The Home she was in, before sectioning, should have been able to meet her needs, but unfortunately Mum seems to be suffering the extreme end of this disease. With hindsight I would have pressed for an assessment long ago.
Wishing you well becasue this is awful to witness and to deal with.

Sounds much the same as my mum. You have to think of all concerned including other residents and unfortunately they are complaining, rightly so. Have spoken to SS and no help. Have found a home with vacancies but only for LA funding not self funding! I think I will speak to SS again and see if they SHOULD release one of these beds for our Mum. Yes sectioning does sound extreme but its the only way to get help sometimes. I was a Social Worker in a previous life so understand the position. If its the only way so be it. I will speak to SS first. Many thanks. I must look at these NHS pots. OMG I am so stressed!

Local Authororty blocked booked beds.

Mum is self funding and have been told that as she is self funding cannot have a empty bed as SS have it booked, just in case. Anyone any ideas how I could persuade them to give it up. My mum needs to be moved urgently now and we are at our wits end.

Care Act?

Could you use the Care Act?

Under the new Care Act, self funders should be treated exactly the same way as those who require financial assistance from the local authority, i.e. if there is an assessed need, care should be based on that need, rather than financial situation...

You could suggest them 'spot purchasing' a bed instead of using a contract bed, which means (I think) that your mum would end up paying the private funded rate rather than local authority rate.

Sorry, I can't be more help. Good luck

I wish I could help, Valmo. Is there a CPN involved? Has there been an assessment for NHS CHC? Could the mental health team be brought in to assess? They may be able to suggest appropriate Homes, including getting a place in the Home you like.
Not very helpful, but I know how it feels to be at the end of one's wits

Good idea will have a look at this act.
I am thinking of contacting SS and make a fuss about their empty booked beds and my Mums needs at this time. Going to have alook at a home this am. Will talk to manager about this issue. Thanks
