Reconditioned stairlifts

Has anyone got one?

They're widely advertised on ebay with fitting and guarantee for as little as £500. All the firms that advertise have high feedback scores - mostly 100% or very close to that.

If you think they're necessary, I don't see why not. Reconditioning saves a bit of money and they serve the same purpose.

I have to say, while I don't see anything wrong with reconditioned, ebays feedback system is not something I would rely on. My understanding is that the way it's set up now, it's difficult for a buyer to leave a poor rating unless the seller has done something truly egregious. So reconditioned is fine, but maybe not from ebay unless the seller is themselves one of the manufacturers.

I agree to an extent Jennifer, but you can also read the comments and make a judgement. I have used ebay for many, many purchases almost since it was available and have had very few problems. But straight from the manufacturer would be best.

Stanley I had just about ordered one when John's walkabouts got worse and I put it on hold as I have been advised to look for a care home. The company which measured us up was recommended by the OT and quoted £950. No bends or radiators.

Look for a local company with good reputation.

Several of the ebay advertisers are companies specialising in reconditions stair lifts, I would be happier buying from these rather than 'I can install it for you ready for collection' type of ad.

Yes, there are a number of specialist companies that operate nationwide as well as some more local ones.

No experience of reconditioned but for Mom I had a New Acorn Stair Lift. The fitter who installed it worked for 3 other companies as well at the same time and had a different sweat shirt for each.

If I had to do it again I would go recon with a guarantee. If it is a straight foreword set up there isn't really much too it.

I would say stanna stair lifts well know I also know one of the fitters .but we were told by OT that people with dementia should not have a stair lift

Typical dementia-unfriendly generalisation from the OT (no reflection on you in that comment). Such a person should know better. It's like the people who say people with dementia shouldn't drive. Some will be able to use a stair-lift, some won't. If the PWD is/was living alone the situation would need to be carefully assessed, of course.

Ours would be for my wife and she wouldn't be able to operate it on her own but would almost certainly be capable of sitting still on it - with practice. An OT expressed the view that she wouldn't accept the bath seat, but we used it daily until overnight she lost the ability to get upstairs. If this ability isn't recoverable a stairlift might be worth trying.

make sure that if you do buy a recon one, it includes fitting. the fitting could cost a lot if its not included.

Yes indeed. It will usually be those from people who are just selling one that they have bought and finished with who will not offer fitting but it is certainly something to confirm.
