Shaking arm and strange walk?
I have noticed that my mums right arm and hand shakes quite violently at times but not all the time. It does appear to get worse if she is aggitated.
Also I have noticed that when mum is walking it is as if her boots hurt her feet and when I have looked at her boots the heels are really worn out at one side. I insisted that she put a more comfortable pair of shoes on when we went to the shop but she still seems to walk strange, and oh so slowly! yet she insists her shoes dont hurt at all. Has anyone else come across these two problems? Thanks Caroline |

Hello Caroline
The shakeing arm.
Have a doctor check it out. Might be Parkinsons. Thats how we found out about my hubbies Parkinsons. Also the walking. Do not worry, hubby had his Parkinsons confirmed many, many years ago, he is still here ![]() With love Barb X

Hi Caroline, my mum’s shaking arm prompted an early potential diagnosis of Parkinsons (and yes, definitely worse when she became agitated) and subsequently she had a diagnosis of Alz with Lewy Bodies (I gather LBD and Parkinsons can have some similar ‘features’?)
As for the ‘strange gait’ – have you checked her feet? Are there chiropody (podiatry)needs? Any arthritic problems? My mum’s ‘leg length variance’ (caused by osteo-arthritis) was remedied as best possible by blocks in her shoe (assessed and provided by physios) which enabled her to walk more comfortably when the chances of orthopaedic surgery were ruled out. Of course some of the difficulty walking could be down to dementia and associated problems with spatial awareness, or pure lack of confidence (has she experienced falls previously?).... Either problem could be attributable to her dementia or a number of other underlying medical causes. Methinks they really need to be reported to her GP for proper referral and medical investigation. Good luck, Karen, x

Hiya
as the others have said, it's worth a visit to the docs - Does she walk ok/faster with a shopping trolley? you may find this makes a difference and may be worth considering a wheeled walker. With Parkinsons it can be an indicator if when walking, arms are held straight down (ie they dont swing as you step), as it is to do with balance, and a trolley/walker can help a lot |
