My mom is in a hospital she is showing signs of Dementia she was found wondering the street where she lives she was convinced there were men in the house so she left because she didn't feel safe.So she was taken to hospital and put on the CDU ward.
She told me that she hates hospitals but this time she don't mind being there she feels safe. But the reason for my question is my mom was able to walk by herself and she could go out she was fine a bit slow walking but fine. Now after only one week...

Hi Caroline and welcome to Talking Point.

I think that you are concerned that your mum is now not walking as well as she did?

I experienced the same thing when my husband was in hospital. I think in his case it was due to medication as his walking improved again after his medication had been sorted out. I wonder if this could be the case with your mum?

I hope that your mum gets the help she needs whilst in hospital and that good care is arranged for when she comes out.
Has she been diagnosed by a consultant? If not this needs to be done so that she has access to medication and help.

I wish you luck. Let us know how you get on.

    Hello again Caroline

The whole of your blog entry hasn't been copied so I've printed it out in full here so we get the full story:

My mom is in a hospital she is showing signs of Dementia she was found wondering the street where she lives she was convinced there were men in the house so she left because she didn't feel safe.So she was taken to hospital and put on the CDU ward.
She told me that she hates hospitals but this time she don't mind being there she feels safe. But the reason for my question is my mom was able to walk by herself and she could go out she was fine a bit slow walking but fine. Now after only one week and 2 days in this special Hospital/Home she has gone down hill so fast her feet are swollen her chin is resting on her chest she is finding it hard to eat or drink. We as a family are worried sick we feel that they way mom is has nothing to do with her illness but the OP keeps saying oh its because of the drugs but I have known my mother for 48 yrs they have known her for just over a week.We as a family don't feel she is being looked after the best way possable.I need help to know what to do

    Hello Caroline

It sounds as if your mother has been having frightening hallucinations, believing there were men in her house.

The medication will be to try to stop those hallucinations. Sometimes it takes a while to get the dose right and I feel sure the hospital will not send your mother home until the medication is correct. Hopefully, once it is right she will walk again and her back will straighten.

If her feet are swollen it might help if she sits with her legs up.

It is significant your mother doesn`t mind being in hospital because she feels safe. It hows how frightened she was with the hallucinations when she was alone at home.

Hello Caroline, and welcome to Talking Point, I am so sorry that your mum did not feel safe in her own home, these hallucinations are very real to our loved ones. My mother in law has Vasular Dementia and for a long time told us that men were going into her house taking her food, moving items and sometimes they even came in with knives, she said they came in through the fridge! but medication can help but can take a while to get the dose right, yes mum in law did go into hospital and was in there a week she was in a bad way for a few days but after the medication kicked in she felt safe again and then started to be like her oldself again, but it DID take time. Please let us know how things are going.

    Best wishes x
    Chris
