Transporting my grandmother from Spain to England.

Hi everyone, I'm hoping to get some advice about my grandmother. She has lived in Spain for many years now. However her condition is deteriorating quite rapidly and all my family would like to bring her home to England so we can take better care of her. My mother is currently in Spain, planning to bring her home on Monday but she won't eat, drink, sleep or sit still. Does anyone have any advice as to what to do? Many thanks.

Oh dear Frees, I'm sorry I have no experience to help here. Is she already on any medication which might help to calm her for the flight?

Hi frees and welcome to TP. Has your mum spoken to the airline about your grandmother's condition? This factsheet on traveling (see the section on Travelling by Air) may help

Welcome to TP. What a worry for you and how difficult for your Mother, can she manage on her own, or has she arranged for help at the airport in Spain, they do have people who help with disabled people, you may need to request assistance to get her on the plane, and will your Grandmother manage all the stairs etc on landing, or need assistance again.

Do hope the journey goes ok and that you can settle your Grandmother when she is back

Oh dear! It really sounds as if your grandmother could do with two people to accompany her. Especially as the noise and bustle of an airport can add to an already confused mind. I hope your mother can get some fluids into her, too before she travels as the flight can only add to her dehydration.
It is probably too late now, as she flies tomorrow, but it might be worth asking her doctor if he thinks a sedative for the journey might be helpful.
We are flying my mother from Spain to New York in about 8 weeks but she is only in the early stages of dementia so we don't have the problem of not eating or drinking but we already know she is going to find the journey very stressful and disorientating.
I will keep my fingers crossed that your grandmother's journey home is achieved without too many problems.
