    My Dads House

    Evening all,

My Dad is currently in a mental health unit pending a proper diagnoses of a current 'paranoid episode' but does have vascular dementia.

He owns his house outright (following the death of my Mum a couple of years ago) but my Nan (his mother-in-law) lives there & has done so for approx 6-7 years. Although my Nan is 91, she only has carers come in morning & evening to get her dressed and then she spends the day at a day centre. However, she does need someone with her during the night due to being very anxious and also to prepare her breakfast & tea. At this time there is no need for her to go into a home.

My point is that should my dad ever need to go into a home himself, where would it leave my nan? Whilst my dad is in hospital I am staying, but this appears to be for an indefinite amount of time and I also have to consider my family ( two young children & hubby). Would we be ok to live there on a permanent basis, assuming there were sufficient funds to pay for his care without selling the property or is this out of the question? (it is the home I grew up in & has a lot of sentimental value).

Hope someone has some suggestions.....thank you.

From the way I have read the rules, nan would be safe in the house because she is a close relative over the age of 60, in other words I beleive the house would be disregarded because of this rule.

HOWEVER, strongly suggest you check with either local authority, citizens advice bureau etc as NON of us are EXPERTS.

As to living in the house; various questions come to mind like would you sell your own, does dad have capacity to allow you to live there, do you have LPA, who would pay the bills etc etc etc.

So similarly, I think the best course of action for you is professional advice.

For your info, OH and I sold up and now live with and care for my mum in her property (we paid for the house some 20 years ago) but left house in mums name.

Thank you for your reply; we have a meeting at the unit today with Dads docs etc, so will hopefully have a better picture of what's happening but either way I was going to speak to our solicitor to get to grips with all the 'practical' matters.
