    How long for diagnosis?

    HI there
This is my second post, as I posted a while back asking for advice re my Mum who has been having signs of dementia/memory problems.
We went and saw the GP a few weeks back and Mum didnt do too well on the tests. She has been referred to the memory clinic at the local hospital and she has had a chest x ray, bloods taken, she has to also go for a CT scan next week. After all these tests what happens next? How long did it actually take for your relative to get diagnosed?
The strange thing is, my Mum has been great all week, no memory problems at all, but still sleeping alot.
Can you tell me what your experience was? Thanks!

    Hello Limana

Our experience was the same, docs memory test, memory clinic, hospital tests, scan and I'd say it was about 4 to six weeks before we actually went in to receive the diagnosis of Frontal Lobe Dementia. I asked privately that a nurse take my mum out of the room on some pretext or other and that the consultant couched his language in front of her, it is referred to as 'memory problems' in any dealings we have. He drew the brain for me and explained what was going on. I couldn't have wished for a more sensitive and caring experience.

Upsetting and uncertain times for you I know, my heart goes out to you. Be strong Limana and upbeat as far as possible, this is what you can give your mum.

    All the very best

    Hello Limana:

My husband was diagnosed 7 years ago after a series of psychological tests - they took over 18 mths to complete. In the meantime I was explaining his confusion and disorientation.

He had blood tests at the outset to rule out other problems. He did not have a scan because of a pacemaker. So in our case it took nearly 2 years for diagnosis and before medication was started although it was fairly evident that he had some form of dementia for many years prior to that.

I am sure others will be along soon with their experiences.
