Social Worker Responsibilities

Rate this Entry
Good evening everyone,

I have an old friend who has been in a psychiatric ward since the end of March. He has been allowed home for a weekend, then on the heels of that, allowed to stay at home for a whole week.

He is innocently irritating his neighbours (he is the youngest of the bunch at 76), with his frequent visit and lack of social queues. He has asked one neighbour to hold money for him, so that she can pay his bills using her debit card and then pay the equavalent cash into her account. She has tried to resist this, but he became tearful. When the neighbour asked if he could get his Social Worker to do these tasks, he stated that the SW doesn't handle cash and refuses to get involved with bill payments.

Does anyone know if this is fact or fiction?

Thanks

Tooshie x

I do not think Local authority workers can take over handling the money itself, but they can support people to make arrangments to manage their money, ie go to bank, made direct debits etc. In order for SS to manage someone's finances it has to go through quite a lengthy formal process.

For some people, who do not have family a trusted friend or neighbour who is willing does help them, but there have been threads on this site about that causing problems. However the social worker should if not able to help in person, find someone else to help sort the problem out as bills etc do have to be paid.
