Hello, we have had a emotional roller coaster of a week , on Monday last week my father in law whom is 86 was diagnosed with vascular dementia brought on by many TIA mini strokes , and
the same week my mother inlaw 82 was diagnosed with Alzimers which came as no surprise unlike my father inlaw . We had a meeting with health care workers to sort out a care plan, not sure with it being the long bank holiday how long this will take, my mother inlaw refuses to shower or change her clothes which reading on here seems to be quite common my mother inlaw was always immaculate I have tired the softly softly approach and would not use anything else but she won't change her clothes or shower she has already had urine infections, my father inlaw is struggling with her as it him who lives with her we are all worried about them both any advice would be welcome

Yep aversion to water, washing, clean clothes and so on. You have to be strong and tell yourself it is in her interest. So brace yourself, in my houselhold it is a daily battle with my mother. A battle I always win. First I use the gentle approach which usually fails. (It is in her interest that this task is completed). I take a no nonsence approach. I tell her I am removing her nightdress and immediatley whip her nightdress over head, and begin to wash her. Knickers follw suit and so on. By now the agression, violence and screams for help ( because she is being murdered) have begun. If the situation becomes to threathening for me I exited the bathroom and wait a few seconds before re-entering. Its tough going, but has to be done. And however bad it becomes - this is brought on by the alzheimer's and not loved one behaving this way. In my head I call him Mr. Alzheimer or the Demon and whilst my mother is kicking off I mentally tell Mr Alzheimer or The Demon to ........ You can fill in the dots.
