My step-father (Trevor)is in final stages of Alzheimers. Diagnosed just over 10 years now at the age of 61. Although we are members of Alzheimer's Society, my mother and I have had no contact with other people who have been affected by Alzheimers, much to my regret now. It's been a lonely and isolated experience.
Trevor was admitted to hospital over a week ago with chest infection, he remains in hospital awaiting placement in nursing home. He's not coming home. During the last 5 months he has had no quality of life, he is double incontinent, cannot tend to any personal needs, cannot mobilise, speak, rapid weight loss due to inability to swallow over 1 year now, doesn't recognise his wife, me and other family members and has serious physical health problems.....the list is endless.
I've been reading lots of inspirational messages on this website and wonder how on earth did these people get to this position of feeling so positive.
I realise this is a very depressing blog, and not encouraging to people reading this who have family with early onset of Alzheimers. But my message to people in this situation is: don't do what my mother and I did, seek support and comfort from other people in similar situation.

Dear Vita - I was so very sorry to read this, your first post at this website, and so sorry that you had not found it earlier than you did. I have been a member only since April and it has been such a source of help, comfort and friendship. I would have felt very isolated without it. I do hope you will continue to post here and let us know how things progress, no matter how sad they are. Love, Nan XXXPosted 07-11-2009 at 03:38 PM by Nan2seven

Hello vita
What a pity you found Talking Point so late in your step father`s struggle with Alzheimers.Quote:seek support and comfort from other people in similar situation
If you would like to post on the main forum in the Support for people with dementia and their carers Section you will get much more support than from your Blog.
Not as many people visit Blogs as visit the Forum.Posted 07-11-2009 at 10:27 PM by Grannie G
