Today I awoke early and felt refreshed and well. All the stress and strain of yesterday had gone and today was a new dawn. I had a friend coming to visit first thing and an appointment at the GP surgery for a blood test to check my thyroid a little later. Whilst at the surgery I asked the nurse if she could do my flu jab to save me coming back on Saturday and she did.

You will understand that it was not easy to determine the point at which Alzheimer's kicked in and overtook the inevitable memory loss and irrationality that comes with long-term alcohol abuse. But there was a point, about five years ago, when it became evident to all who knew him that something else was afoot. Living our retirement dream in France as we do, it was not difficult to get a diagnosis and treatment. He has been taking Aricept for three
