    Hi melody and lyn

This is in the blog section which is usually where people post more personal diary form posts (and dont always reply) - why not try the main forum area? there are similar threads there in the 'support for carers etc' area

HELLO .. AFTER WATCHING THE PROGRAM LAST NIGHT IT HAS JUST MADE ME WANT TO TRY AND DO SOMETHING ABOUT THE CARE THAT OUR LOVED ONES RECIEVE IN SOME SO CALLED DEMENTIA CARE UNITS.I HAVE VISITED THIS SITE ON MANY OCCASIONS AND READ MANY SAD AND HAPPY STORIES MOSTLY ABOUT CARERS WHO STRUGGLE AT HOME WITH THE CARE OF THERE LOVED ONES NOT MUCH ABOUT IF WE ARE NOT HAPPY ABOUT CARE HOMES.ITS THE BEST THING IN THE WORLD IF WE ARE ABLE TO DO THE CARING AT HOME,BUT AS IN MY CASE IT CAME TO A POINT WHERE THAT WAS NO LONGER POSSIBLE WITH MY MOTHER.SHE WENT IN TO A DEMENTIA CARE UNIT IN OUR HOME TOWN AND RECIEVED A GOOD QUALITY OF CARE,BUT AS THE DEMENTIA GOT EVEN WORSE THEY WERE NO LONGER ABLE TO PROVIDE THE LEVEL OF CARE NEEDED FOR MUM,THEN INTO ANOTHER UNIT NOT OF MY CHIOCE BECAUSE NOWHERE ELSE AVAILABLE AND NO FUNDS TO MAKE A BETTER CHOICE.WHAT DO WE DO?

Don't be humbled or dissolutioned. In my Dads eyes I still do very little right. It has taken time, trial and error and, I can assure you, many tears to be able to deal with it more philosophically. I used to do many things for Dad that I thought he would like rather than think about what he would like to do. Often what he wants to do is much more simple than I thought. However, even the simple things like going to the Carol Concert can back fire. The key is not to take any rejection personally and keep smiling through it. Next time will be better. Today I shall take him for tea in town which I have discovered he enjoys above most things. We often do this and I sometimes feel a change would be good but with someone with dementia the familiar usually works best. Plus the fact he can't remember he has been so many times! If you can find something your Mum really likes to do and it hits her buttons stick with it the results can be really rewarding.

How on earth do you cope with trying to do the right thing for your Dad - and it all goes pear shaped?.In reading your Blog I feel very humble about the attempts I have made to "do the right thing " for my Mother - and the complete sense of rejection I feel when she really thinks I could do better!
Thank you for your story- it has spurred me on to try a bit harder to get it right - to find the bits of Jigsaw in Mothers mind that might just fit!

I'm sure Age Concern, Help the Aged, and any number of disability related charities would be thrilled to receive any unwanted funds. Giving money away isn't usually the problem!

    Hi
My MIL has just received notification of this too. I have tried to give it back as she is in a care home now although we are still paying rent on her flat and heating it until we can clear it out. I too was told she was entitled to it!
