I visited Dad as part of my regular visits on 17 February 2010. For the first time it was clear he didn't recognise me. I always knew this would happen one day but it was still hard. He clearly thought I was someone he should know but couldn't quite place. I had taken one of his jackets I had had dry cleaned and he didn't recognise it as his and thought it was new. There is no problem with Dad not knowing it is just so sad.

Today is Dads 82nd Birthday. Leaving Dad in the home for Christmas this year was very difficult but I knew in my heart of hearts it was for the best for him. I tried not to think about it too much on Christmas Day. My husband and I both went to see him on Boxing Day as it was his birthday as well. He was absolutely fine when we saw him no concerns at all that we hadn't been the previous day. He was exceptionally animated (probably for my husband's benefit) and rambled on about just about anything. ...

Today was the day of the Christmas Party at Dad's home. I arrived and announced to Dad we were going to a party and he said 'are you dear' (probably hoping it didn't involve him) in truth. All the residents were there and some of their families. We sang carols and everyone had a little dance. I was surprised how much Dad joined in with it all which was great. As soon as we had eaten some of the lovely buffet provided Dad had had enough and was off to his room.

Did anyone see the two programmes on BBC2 last Tuesday and last night? They were pretty hard hitting and very upsetting. I have real concerns about the inconsistent approach to the quality of care home provison in relation to those that can afford and those that can't. Also the relationship between profit and care is a real worry. The government really needs to face up to the fact there is going to be a much greater need for dementia care in the future. I am passionate that people with dementia ...

Today The Alzheimer's Society were holding a carol concert in the chapel at the British Legion Home where Dad lives. There was also refreshments and a buffet being held afterwards. I had arranged to take Dad. I arrived at about 1.30pm. He had forgotten what we were doing but said he was still happy to go along. I could tell he wasn't in the best of humours. The chapel is very small but it is a lovely atmosphere. The lay preacher had a nativity set which had been knitted by a student of hers ...
